Biography

Helen Yaffe joined the University of Glasgow as a Lecturer in Economic and Social History in January 2018. She previously taught Economic History at the London School of Economics, History at University College London, and Development Studies at Birkbeck, University of London. Her teaching focuses on Latin American and Cuban development. At LSE, Yaffe taught history, economics, and political economy of late development. In 2011, she joined the Geography Department at the University of Leicester as a Research Associate, collaborating with Professor Gavin Brown on a Leverhulme-funded project titled 'Non-Stop Apartheid', which explored the history and geography of the Non-Stop Picket maintained by the City of London Anti-Apartheid Group from 1986 to 1990. Yaffe published a book titled 'Youth Activism and Solidarity: The Non-Stop Picket Against Apartheid' in 2017. In 1995, as a teenager, she spent time in Cuba, conducting research that formed the basis of her doctoral thesis at LSE, subsequently published as 'Che Guevara: Economics and Revolution' by Palgrave Macmillan in 2009. Her ongoing research continues to focus on Cuban development, with a forthcoming book titled 'Cuba! The Revolutionary People Who Survived the Post-Soviet World', set for publication by Yale University Press in February 2020.
