Helena Backman is an Associate Professor and project leader of the Obstructive Lung Disease Northern Sweden (OLIN) Studies, an ongoing epidemiological research program that commenced in 1985. Her research primarily focuses on classical respiratory epidemiology, especially studies related to asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung function. She combines clinical epidemiology with data from national registers to evaluate the prognosis of asthma and COPD, paying special attention to specific phenotypes of obstructive lung diseases. With over 35 years of clinical data, the OLIN studies present unique opportunities to investigate long-term prognosis in these conditions. Backman has held several significant roles including member of the OLIN steering committee, project leader of the OLIN research line focused on asthma in adults, and representative of Umeå University in various research collaborations. She is also an associate editor for the Respiratory Medicine Journal and has been actively involved in numerous research networks and committees addressing respiratory health and epidemiology.
