Dr. Helena Larsson

Biography

Helena Elding Larsson is a Professor in Paediatric Endocrinology at Lund University and the research team manager in the Strategic Research Area, EXODIAB, focusing on excellence in diabetes research in Sweden. Her research interests include pediatric autoimmune disorders, specifically type 1 diabetes and autoimmune thyroid disease, affecting 2-3% of children. She investigates genetic and environmental factors that trigger autoimmune processes in genetically susceptible individuals, aiming to identify genetic and immunological risk factors for these conditions. Her projects involve large prospective studies such as the Diabetes Prediction Skåne (DiPiS) and Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY). Ongoing research also includes clinical trials for the primary prevention of type 1 diabetes through various interventions and immunological studies. She actively contributes to efforts in public health related to these conditions and engages with the wider scientific community through seminars and collaborations.
