Biography

Helena Zeweri is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. Zeweri's research focuses on ethnographic methods in anthropology, particularly exploring the complex relationships of power, migration, and social welfare policies. She completed her PhD in Cultural Anthropology at Rice University, where she studied migrant-targeted social welfare policies in Melbourne, Australia. Her teaching and research interests include the intersections of culture and politics, diasporic belonging, and the ethnography of Australia. She challenges traditional notions of migration deterrence and its social impacts on Afghan communities in both Australia and the United States. Zeweri's current SSHRC-funded project investigates the historical contexts and ramifications of Australia’s extraterritorial border policies and their effects on Afghan refugees. She has published extensively, including her recent book 'Care Criminality: Marriage, Citizenship, Family Australian Social Welfare' (2023).
