Biography

Hélène Vilavella Collins is a Teaching Professor in the Department of French and Italian Studies at the University of Washington. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 1996. Her dissertation focused on French cinema director Max Ophuls, specifically examining the interplay between Ophuls' aesthetics and the contamination of film by the Nazi propaganda apparatus during the post-World War II era. She teaches 200 and 300 level French classes, including language and film courses. Collins has developed a French Business course and teaches part of an advanced grammar and composition series at the 300 level. Additionally, she serves as the director for study abroad programs in Nantes and Paris, and coordinates the Comparative Literature Paris Fall study abroad program.
