Dr. Helga Weber

Biography

Helga Weber is a researcher at the Institute of Geography at the University of Bern. Her expertise lies in remote sensing with a focus on Earth Observation data. Dr. Weber's research interests include the retrieval of essential climate variables (ECVs) from long-term Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) satellite data, covering parameters such as snow, lake ice, active fires, and vegetation dynamics. She has been involved in various significant projects, including the development of space-based fractional snow cover time series for the period 1981-2021 as part of the GCOS Swiss initiative. Her academic background includes a PhD in which she conducted an accuracy assessment of long-term fire products derived from satellite data, as well as a Master's thesis focused on the automated extraction of lake ice phenology time series using AVHRR data. Dr. Weber's work contributes to our understanding of climate change impacts on the environment, particularly in the Alpine region and broader European context. She has published her findings in academic journals and has actively participated in collaborative research to enhance the usability of climate data for scientific communities and the public.
