Biography

Professor Helma Dik specializes in Greek language linguistics and syntax, particularly within Classical Greek. Her primary research interest lies in the interplay of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, with a focus on stylistic features evident in the works of authors such as Herodotus, Demosthenes, and Sophocles. With a Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam, she aims to produce a reference grammar of Classical Greek that incorporates recent developments in the field over the last century. Professor Dik has been actively involved in the Perseus Project and other Digital Classics initiatives, co-organizing an annual colloquium on Digital Humanities. Her current research includes automated parsing algorithms for Greek and Latin texts, as well as investigating gendered language and text mining within drama. She has supervised numerous dissertations focusing on Greek prose style and has guided students who have gone on to be consultants and researchers in both industry and academia. Additionally, she maintains a blog, Logeion Philo4Classics, which features educational materials related to Greek language study.
