Biography

Professor Helmut Friess is the director of the Surgical Clinic Policlinic at TUM's Klinikum rechts der Isar since 2007. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms that influence the development, growth factors, and aggressiveness of pancreatic carcinoma. He has clarified important molecular signaling pathways that contribute to the local infiltrative growth and metastasis of this highly malignant tumor. Professor Friess has led multiple surgical clinical trials examining surgical techniques for the resection of pancreatic tumors and has directed multicenter studies on adjuvant therapies. He earned his medical degree from the University of Ulm and obtained his postdoctoral teaching qualification (habilitation) in 1998 from the University of Bern in Switzerland. Additionally, he has held positions as a doctor scientist at the University of California at Irvine (1992-1993) and as a senior physician at the Inselspital University of Bern (1997-2001) and the University Hospital Heidelberg (2001-2007). He is also an honorary professor at the R.E. Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology, and Radiobiology of the National Academy of Science in Ukraine, and he serves as a member of the General Assembly of the United European Gastroenterology Federation (UEGF) and as Secretary of the European Digestive Surgery (EDS).
