Biography

Helmut Puff is an Elizabeth L. Eisenstein Collegiate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Michigan. His teaching and research focus on German literature, history, and culture during the late medieval and early modern periods. He specializes in gender studies and the history of sexuality, exploring the intersections among textuality, visuality, and spatiality. Puff's work examines changing representations of ruins and historical city models from the sixteenth century to the present, with a particular focus on visual culture in early modern Europe, especially the art of Albrecht Dürer.
