Professor Dr. Hemme Battjes

Biography

Hemme Battjes is a Full Professor specializing in Migration Law at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He has an extensive academic background, holding a Master’s degree in Russian Language Literature from Universiteit van Amsterdam obtained in 1995, an LLM in 2000, and a PhD earned cum laude in 2006 from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Professor Battjes is actively involved in teaching and supervision within the Master’s track in International Migration and Refugee Law, and frequently conducts training courses aimed at professionals in the field of migration law. His research encompasses the intersections of asylum law, European Union law, and human rights law, contributing significantly to the literature on these subjects. His dissertation analyzed the relationship between international asylum law and human rights law within the framework of EU law. Over the years, he has published widely in various international, European, and Dutch journals and books, focusing particularly on the developments in asylum and migration law. Battjes has received the esteemed Praemium Erasmianum award in 2007 for his dissertation work on European asylum law. He also participates in various ancillary activities, serving as a substitute judge in Haarlem since June 2020 and actively engaging in various academic and professional networks related to migration law.
