Biography

Hendrik Utzat is an Assistant Professor in the College of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, since 2022. He completed his postdoctoral research at Stanford University in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 2022. He earned his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2019 and holds a Master’s degree in Chemistry from ETH Zurich (2013) and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from RWTH Aachen University (2008-2011). His research focuses on Nanoscience, Nanophotonics, Single Molecule Spectroscopy, Quantum Optics, Colloidal Inorganic Nanostructures, Bio-Nanophotonics, and Materials Chemistry. The objective of Utzat's research group is to understand and harness light-matter interactions at nanoscale materials, aiming to synthesize emerging semiconductor materials with tailored optical properties at the level of individual excitations. This research contributes to the development of next-generation materials for optoelectronics, including single-photon sources, light-emitting diodes, and nanoscale lasers. Key concepts in his work encompass surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, quantum-enhanced optical measurements, and new SERS enhancement platforms, providing vital insights for unraveling biomacromolecular processes at the single-molecule level.
