Dr. Henk Giele

Biography

Henk Giele is a Professor of Plastic Surgery and a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Hand Surgeon at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Oxford. He completed his medical education at the University of Western Australia before pursuing a Master's in Surgery at the University of Melbourne. Giele has extensive surgical training and experience in multiple hospitals across Western Australia and has held fellowships in Oxford and Paris. His clinical interests include microsurgery, peripheral neurosurgery, and orthoplastic reconstruction, with involvement in various specialized units such as the Bone Infection Unit and the Paediatric/Congenital Hand Service. Giele is known for his innovative approach to surgical problems, particularly in addressing intestinal failure. His research has focused on developing techniques for islet transplantation and understanding the immunological aspects of transplantation, emphasizing personalized approaches to treatment. He holds memberships in several prestigious surgical societies and has received awards for his contributions to medicine, including the Arris Gale Lectureship from the Royal College of Surgeons.
