Biography

Henk Swagten is a full-time professor in the group Physics Nanostructures (FNA) at the Department of Applied Physics, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His areas of expertise include materials technology, nanotechnology, atomic physics, and molecular physics. Swagten investigates the emerging field of layered magnetic structures and spin-based electronics, also known as 'spintronics'. His research focuses on new magnetic and electrical phenomena, closely relating to industrial applications within electronic devices. He has been awarded a VICI grant by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) to establish research lines in the area of spin transport in semiconductors, new materials, magneto-resistance, and scanning tunneling microscopy of magnetic surfaces for the development of spin-based electronics. Henk Swagten earned his Ph.D. with honors from the Cooperative Phenomena group of the Faculty of Applied Physics at TU/e, focusing on experimental research exploring ordering phenomena and interactions in magnetic semiconducting materials. In 1991, he contributed as a researcher at the University of Notre Dame. In addition to his responsibilities at TU/e, Henk serves as the Editor Chief for NTVN (Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Natuurkunde), a notable publication for the Netherlands Physics Society.
