Professor Dr. Henny Piezonka

Biography

Henny Piezonka is a Professor of Prehistoric Archaeology at Freie Universität Berlin. As a principal investigator in collaborative research projects, she leads various externally funded studies, focusing on places like Mongolia and India. Her academic journey includes studies in Prehistory, Classical Archaeology, and Art History at universities in Berlin and Glasgow. Her Master's thesis, recognized by awards such as the Humboldt Prize, explored the Bronze to Iron Age transitions in the former Neumark region, while her doctorate addressed the spread of prehistoric ceramics across Eastern Europe. Piezonka has extensive experience in archaeological field research across Europe, North, and Inner Asia, particularly concerning hunter-gatherer and nomadic pastoralist societies. She has explored the dynamics of social inequalities and human-environment interactions through research within the Kiel Excellence Cluster. Piezonka's work bridges archaeological methods with ethnoarchaeological insights to better understand the lifeways and material culture of these ancient populations, contributing essential knowledge about long-term socio-cultural changes from the end of the Ice Age to the present.
