Biography

Henrik Mouritsen is a Professor of Roman History at King's College London. He was born and educated in Denmark and completed his PhD focusing on Pompeii. He moved to Britain in 1991 for postdoctoral research at both Cambridge University and University College London. He has also taught at the University of Leicester before being appointed as a lecturer at King’s College in 1999. In 2008, he was promoted to Professor of Roman History and served as Head of the Department of Classics from 2009 to 2013. His research has significantly contributed to the understanding of Roman political history, with a particular focus on the Roman Republic, including the study of Roman slavery, manumission, and Latin epigraphy. He held a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship from 2005 to 2008 and led an AHRC-funded research project from 2013 to 2017, aimed at producing digital prosopography of the Roman Republic. Mouritsen is also interested in historiography, both ancient and modern, and the reception of antiquity, particularly in relation to Latin epigraphy.
