Biography

Henry T. Greely is the Deane F. and Kate Edelman Johnson Professor of Law at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Genetics. He specializes in ethical, legal, and social issues arising from advances in the biosciences, particularly in genetics, neuroscience, and human stem cell research. He chairs the California Advisory Committee on Human Stem Cell Research and serves on various committees, including the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Science, Technology, and Law. Greely graduated from Stanford University in 1974 and Yale Law School in 1977, where he served as a law clerk for notable judges. He has been teaching at Stanford since 1985 and directs the Stanford Center for Law and the Biosciences and the Stanford Program on Neuroscience and Society. His research interests include the legal challenges of stem cell research, the ethical implications of genomic biobanks, and cognitive enhancement. Greely is also an influential figure in discussions surrounding prenatal genetic diagnosis and human/non-human chimeras, alongside being a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
