Biography

Henry Shum is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. He completed his M.Math.Phys. degree at the University of Warwick and obtained his D.Phil. in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Oxford in 2012. He has held postdoctoral positions in the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford and within the Department of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on the modeling and simulation of microscale fluidic systems, including the locomotion of microorganisms and bio-inspired microrobotic swimmers. He is particularly interested in the areas of chemical signaling in artificial cells and has contributed significantly to the understanding of biological fluid dynamics, microorganism motility, chemomechanical coupling, and synthetic chemical reaction networks.
