Dr. Herb Emery

Biography

Herb Emery is a seasoned academic and the Vaughan Chair in the Department of Political Science at the University of New Brunswick. He specializes in the development of the Canadian economy, particularly focusing on the persistence of long-standing regional disparities. Emery's research integrates political, historical, cultural, and institutional factors that have shaped the development processes in Canada. He began his tenure as Vaughan Chair in July 2016, and prior to that, he had a distinguished career at the University of Calgary spanning from 1993 to 2016, where he served as a Full Professor in Economics and held various leadership roles, including the Research Director of the School of Public Policy and the Svare Professor in Health Economics. Emery has maintained a strong publication record and has served as the Managing Editor for the Canadian Public Policy journal, the leading journal in Canada for examining economic and social policy. His research also addresses the critical role of manufacturing in the post-Coronavirus global economy, leading initiatives to improve New Brunswick's economic competitiveness in this sector. Emery holds both a Master's and a PhD in Economics from the University of British Columbia.
