Biography

Herbary Cheung is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Gender Studies at Monash University's School of Arts and Social Sciences in Malaysia. He was born, raised, and educated in the United States, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. He received his PhD in Sociology and Social Policy through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme. Before joining Monash University in 2023, Cheung served as a Research Assistant Professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His research focuses on educational processes and the co-production of knowledge involving students and communities, particularly concerning gender, migration, family, marriage, health, social development, and social policy in Southeast Asia. Cheung has published in leading peer-reviewed journals including Qualitative Research and Journal of Sociology. He has authored monographs such as 'Engendering Migration Journey' and 'Single Mothers in Thailand'. Currently, he is a Research Associate at the Institut de Recherche sur l’Asie du Sud-Est Contemporaine (IRASEC) and is involved in various research projects related to gender, migration, and social justice. In 2025, he will receive the GenSeM Article Award for his work co-authored with Asuncion Fresnoza-Flot. Cheung also serves on the editorial boards of several international journals.
