Biography

Chung-Yuen Hui majored in physics and mathematics during his undergraduate studies and completed his doctoral work in applied mechanics at Harvard University. He joined the Cornell faculty in 1981. Hui is a recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Tau Beta Pi Teaching Award in 2005. He was honored with the 3M Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science in 2011 and has published over 230 papers in international journals. His current research interests lie in the intersection of mechanics and materials, focusing on adhesion science, fracture mechanics, and mechanics of soft matter over the past decade. His recent projects involve bio-inspired architectures for controlled adhesion and friction properties, crack propagation in self-healing polymer gels with high toughness, and computational functional characterization of molecular steps in Membrane Fusion, as well as mapping cancer cell traction forces in 3D biomatrix contexts. His work contributes to advancements in polymers, soft matter, computational solid mechanics, materials design, and advanced manufacturing.
