Herbert Klein is a Professor of History at Stanford University and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He was born in the Bronx, New York City, and graduated from Far Rockaway High School before pursuing a degree in history at Syracuse University and later transferring to the University of Chicago, where he earned his BA in 1957, MA in 1959, and PhD in 1963, with a major in history and a minor in anthropology. He began his teaching career in Latin American history at the University of Chicago from 1962 until 1969, then continued at Columbia University from 1969 to 2005, where he was named Gouverneur Morris Professor of History. After retiring from Columbia, he became the director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Stanford for six years. Klein has published around 25 books on topics including the history of slavery, the Atlantic slave trade, and demographic history, and has contributed extensively to the understanding of history in Bolivia, Brazil, and the United States. His other academic honors include being a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, Guggenheim Fellow, and Fulbright Lecturer, among many prestigious grants.
