Biography

Herbert L. Smith is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania and the Director of the Population Studies Center. He has held various leadership roles including Director from 2005 to 2009 and from 2011 to 2014. He was also the President of the Commission d’Évaluation at the Institut National d’Études Démographiques in France from 2009 to 2013. Smith served as the Associate Dean for Social Sciences at the School of Arts and Sciences and was elected to the Sociological Research Association in 1991. His research has been recognized with the Clifford C. Clogg Award for early career achievement from the Population Association of America in 2002. His current research focuses on using double sampling to reduce bias in survey research and involves econometric models and stochastic time series for demographic projections. His research interests encompass the design of social demographic studies, causation, measurement, and the relationships among education, race differences, and family dynamics in various regions across Asia.
