Dr. Hergen Buscher began his medical career in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia in Germany in 1994. He defended his thesis on the 'Work of Breathing Pressure-Time-Product in ICU Patients', earning the academic Doctorate from the University of Göttingen. Recognized within the German academic system for steps to professorial honors, he furthered his training as an ECMO Fellow in Leicester, UK, during the CESAR trial, where he developed an interest in extracorporeal life support (ECLS). Since moving to Australia in 2005, he completed his Australian qualifications in Intensive Care Medicine and joined St. Vincent’s Hospital as a Staff Specialist in 2008. Dr. Buscher currently leads intensive care research at St. Vincent's, focusing on critical care for patients undergoing heart and lung transplantation and the utilization of ECLS in cardiac arrest situations. He has been the principal investigator for numerous multi-center studies, serves on the steering committee for the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (Asia-Pacific Chapter), and is a member of the Sydney ECLS research group. He has authored over 30 original papers with more than 600 citations, maintains a current h-index of 16, and has been an invited speaker at 20 national and international conferences.
