Biography

Dr. Herman Wijnen joined the University of Southampton in 2012 and currently holds the position of Associate Professor in Biological Sciences. He previously was part of the Department of Biology at the University of Virginia, where he led research addressing the basis of daily timekeeping in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. From 2000 to 2004, he conducted postdoctoral work with Professor Michael Young at Rockefeller University, featuring pioneering genome-wide studies of daily rhythms of gene expression. Dr. Wijnen's research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying daily rhythms in animal behavior and physiology. His lab, known as the Wijnen Lab, uses invertebrate research models to study signaling pathways that regulate sleep/wake cycles and feeding behaviors. He plays an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and is involved in several research groups addressing critical issues related to plants, food security, and the impacts of global environmental change.
