Hewei Tang is an Assistant Professor in the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on the numerical simulation and experimental study of coupled thermal-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) processes in subsurface energy systems, with particular emphasis on geothermal energy systems and geological carbon storage. Additionally, he investigates produced water management and employs machine learning techniques to enhance data assimilation and dynamic reservoir characterization for drilling completions. Dr. Tang completed his PhD in Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University in 2019, and holds a Master’s degree in the same field from the same institution, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Biomolecular Engineering from Tsinghua University. He is a staff scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he received several accolades, including the Physical Life Sciences Directorate Award in 2023 and the Regional Data Science Engineering Analytics Award from the Society of Petroleum Engineers in 2025. He actively contributes to the academic community as the Executive Editor for Geoenergy Science and Engineering and serves as an Associate Editor for several journals in the field.
