Biography

Hicham Safieddine is an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Department of History. His research focuses on financial and economic intellectual history of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a particular emphasis on the MENA region. He is currently examining the emergence and transformation of global and national monetary regimes, financial systems, capitalist expansion, debt, war, colonial conquest, and national liberation revolutions. His works involve the history of economic thought and modern Arab-Islamic thought, especially during the anti-colonial era of the mid-20th century. Outside of his academic work, he co-founded the e-zine Al-Akhbar English and has published writings in various platforms including Toronto Star, Al-Jazeera English, and Le Monde Diplomatique. His teaching and research cover topics such as Political Economy of the Middle East and Modern Arab Islamic Thought.
