Biography

Hidetoshi Inamine is an ecologist interested in understanding ecological processes at spatiotemporal scales that generate and maintain biodiversity. His research focuses on disturbances, broadly defined as recurrent mortality-inducing events such as fire and flood, which are important drivers of community dynamics and functions. Inamine investigates how disturbance regimes, particularly their frequency and intensity, shape ecological communities and their robustness to future perturbations, including biological invasions. For instance, he studies how increasing disturbance frequency impacts communities differently compared to rising disturbance intensity. Inamine employs laboratory microbial communities or 'microcosms' composed of various strains of soil bacteria (Pseudomonas fluorescens), phage virus (Φ2), and predatory protists (Tetrahymena thermophila) to experimentally test his research questions.
