Biography

Hilary M Carey is a cultural historian specializing in imperial and religious history. Her primary research interests are focused on the history of religion and imperialism, particularly regarding transnational boundaries within the nineteenth-century British Empire. With particular expertise in how religion can either unite or divide empires, she has explored themes of mission-led settler colonialism. Her published work spans topics including the history of religious orders, missionary linguistics, and the missionary interpretation of the colonial Bible. Her recent publications include 'Empire Hell', which discusses the religious history surrounding the campaign for the abolition of transportation for Irish convicts. Hilary's academic training began in medieval history at the University of Oxford, and she also retains an interest in the history of comparative religions and forms of belief across diverse global cultures. Currently, she is engaged in projects focusing on the history of missions involving seafarers and the translation of the Bible into various world languages, alongside authoring a concise history of Newgate's 'condemned sermon'.
