Biography

Hilary Doda teaches Costume Studies at the Fountain School of Performing Arts at Dalhousie University. She completed her Interdisciplinary PhD at Dalhousie University, focusing on Dress Studies, Material Culture Studies, Archaeology, and Atlantic history. Prior to this, she earned her MA in History from Dalhousie, specializing in Early Modern topics, and a BA in Anthropology from McGill University. Dr. Doda’s research interests center around the dress system as a form of symbolic communication, focusing on how dress intersects with political culture and historical contexts in the North Atlantic. Her work explores the role of dress in performance and identity, as well as the implications of early modern trade technologies on clothing and adornment practices, with particular attention to gender roles and sexuality. Her notable book project, 'Acadian Fancy, Fancy Acadians? Clothing Accessories in Acadia, 1650-1750', is under contract with McGill-Queens University Press. Hilary also contributes to academia through various courses related to fashion history, such as 'Caves Castles: Fashion History 1450' and 'Baroque Bustles: Fashion History 1700 – 1900'. Additionally, she has published several articles in reputable journals, contributing to the discourse on material culture in historical contexts.
