Hilary Howes is an Australian Research Council (ARC) DECRA Fellow based in the Centre for Heritage and Museum Studies at the Australian National University (ANU). Her current project, 'Skulls Tsar: Indigenous human remains collections in Imperial Russia', aims to produce a detailed investigation into the acquisition of Indigenous human remains from Australia, New Zealand, and the broader Pacific during the long 19th century. Between 2011 and 2015, she worked as an Executive Assistant to the Ambassador at the Australian Embassy in Berlin, where her responsibilities included facilitating bilateral research collaborations related to the repatriation of Australian Indigenous ancestral remains from German collecting institutions.
