Dr. Hilde Tubex

Biography

Hilde Tubex is a Professor at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in the Law School, where she is involved with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Prisoner Reintegration, co-leading the program focused on improving community contexts for reintegration. Her expertise encompasses comparative criminology and penal policy, with a particular emphasis on Indigenous Peoples' interactions with the criminal justice system and the issues facing criminalized women and people serving life sentences. She joined UWA in 2011, driven by her research on penal cultures in Australian jurisdictions and the overrepresentation of Indigenous populations in the criminal justice system. Tubex holds a PhD in Criminology from the Free University of Brussels, Belgium, and has accrued significant policy-related experience as an advisor on penal policy for the Council of Europe and the Belgian Minister of Justice. During her four years with the Department of Corrective Services in Western Australia, she operated as a Team Leader in Research and Evaluation. Tubex has held several leadership positions at UWA, including Director of Criminology and Deputy Head of Research. Her current research projects include investigations into community-based approaches to Aboriginal offenders, the experiences of Indigenous women in the criminal justice system, and the needs of returning prisoners. She teaches courses on criminal justice and crime policy, contributing valuable insights into the intersection of law, society, and institutional reform.
