Biography

Hildegard Diemberger is the Research Director of the Mongolia and Inner Asia Studies Unit (MIASU) at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Pembroke College. Trained as a social anthropologist and Tibetologist at the University of Vienna, she has published numerous books and articles focusing on anthropology, history, and the Tibetan-Mongolian interface. Her notable works include the monograph "Woman Becomes Religious Dynasty: Samding Dorje Phagmo Tibet" (Columbia University Press, 2007), and the edited volumes "Tibetan Printing – Comparisons, Continuities Change" (Brill, 2016) and "Cosmopolitical Ecologies Asia: Places Power Changing Environments" (Routledge, 2021). Diemberger has designed and coordinated several research projects funded by various councils, including the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Austrian Science Fund. She currently heads an interdisciplinary research project examining the effects of climate change on sacred landscapes in the Himalayas, in collaboration with colleagues in Norway. Her research interests encompass local and state dynamics in rapidly changing traditional communities, exploring themes of power, kinship, gender, and environment within the Tibetan cultural area.
