Biography

Hildegard Schneider studied Law, Political Sciences, and Art History in Freiburg (Breisgau, Germany), London, Paris, and Münster (Germany). She holds a professorship in European Law at universities in Maastricht (The Netherlands) and Hasselt (Belgium) and has been awarded the Jean Monnet Chair in European Migration Law. From September 2011 to December 2017, she served as Dean of the Faculty of Law at Maastricht University, where she was also a member of the management team and the education board of the law faculty in Hasselt, Belgium. During her tenure, Schneider was actively involved in establishing multidisciplinary research centers, including the ITEM - Institute for Transnational and Euregional cross-border cooperation and Mobility, MACIMIDE - Maastricht Centre for Citizenship, Migration and Development, and CERiM Centre for European Research Maastricht. Her research focuses on European Internal Market Law and European Migration Law, especially the free movement of persons, the concept of European citizenship, and the recognition of diplomas. Schneider has led and participated in various EU and nationally funded research projects and has supervised over 25 PhD projects, receiving the Faculty of Law research award in 2001 and a prize for outstanding educational achievements in 1997.
