Dr. Hille Fieten

Biography

Hille Fieten is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University, specializing in Genetic Veterinary Medicine. He coordinates the Expertise Center Genetics, focusing on sustainable breeding and the health of dogs and cats. His work aims to eliminate harmful physical traits and hereditary diseases in pet populations, while promoting genetic diversity as a fundamental objective. He conducts epidemiological research to assess the prevalence of diseases and abnormalities in pets, utilizing a diagnostic registration system called PETscan. Dr. Fieten's molecular genetic research on purebred animal populations has led to the identification of causal mutations that result in biological effects and diseases in animals. Furthermore, he is committed to breeding healthy pets through the development of DNA tests that assist breeders in making informed decisions regarding partner selection, employing a web application named Fit2Breed. His research extends to understanding the relevance of genetic diseases in both pets and humans, as similarities in disease patterns offer insights into complexly inherited genetic conditions. Dr. Fieten has been recognized with a VENI grant to advance his translational genetic research on Labrador Retrievers.
