Dr. Hindy Najman

Biography

Professor Hindy Najman holds the Oriel Laing Professorship of Scriptural Interpretation at Oriel College, University of Oxford. Her research focuses on the intersection of biblical and classical studies, exploring themes such as pseudepigraphy, literary composition, and the authority of texts in antiquity. Najman's early work engaged deeply with the concept of pseudepigrapha and authorial function, investigating how collections of literature from antiquity have shaped contemporary understanding of these works. She collaborates with a range of scholars from various backgrounds, including biblicists, rabbinicists, and experts in Hellenistic literature, to examine how philological practices have developed from ancient times to present day. In recent years, she has focused on the interactions between biblical studies and classical scholarship during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, analyzing how these discussions have influenced contemporary academic thought on text criticism and source criticism.
