Biography

Hirofumi Tanaka is a Professor and the holder of the Ruth Knight Millikan Centennial Professorship at the University of Texas at Austin. He directs the Cardiovascular Aging Research Laboratory and coordinates the Exercise Physiology program. His educational background includes a B.A. in Physical Education from the International Budo University in Japan, an M.S. in Human Bioenergetics from Ball State University, and a Ph.D. in Applied Physiology from the University of Tennessee. Tanaka has completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cardiovascular physiology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His primary research interests include vascular aging, mechanisms underlying vascular dysfunction, and lifestyle modifications to prevent or reverse these conditions. He has studied various populations, including master athletes, and is involved in several studies such as the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study and the Jackson Heart Study. Additionally, his recent research has explored the health of unique populations globally, such as the long-neck Karen women in Thailand and female pearl divers in Japan.
