Generate a tailored SOP for Dr. Hiruy Meharena. Improve your application with a focused, well-structured draft.
Hiruy Meharena leads the Developmental Cognitive Genomics (DevCoGx) Research Group at the University of California, San Diego. The primary focus of the group is to establish a comprehensive molecular map of the developing human brain to identify cell-type specific gene networks that drive neurodevelopmental disorders linked to intellectual disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder. Using mouse models and human-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), the research aims to decode the genomic and molecular signatures that underlie neurodevelopment, cognition, and intellectual disability. Meharena collaborates with scientists, clinicians, and families to seek new therapeutic avenues for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The lab philosophy promotes a safe and inclusive environment fostering creativity, collaboration, and diversity, mentoring individuals from various walks of life who are passionate about scientific research with integrity and transparency.
Administered by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Curricular groups include Climate-Ocean-Atmosphere (COAP), Geosciences (GEO), and Ocean Biosciences (OBP).
