Biography

Hiwot Mekuanent joined Queen's University Faculty of Law in September 2018 as a doctoral candidate focused on improving the lives of people with disabilities through legal frameworks. A recent graduate with a Master of Laws (LLM) in Human Rights Law from Addis Ababa University, Hiwot previously worked as a lecturer and Director of the Disability Studies and Service Directorate at the University of Gondar in Ethiopia for six years, where she concentrated on creating inclusive educational and work environments for students and employees with disabilities. She received the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship to pursue her studies at Queen’s University and has been recognized as an exceptional faculty leader. Hiwot is also a Mandela Washington Fellow, having participated in the Young African Leaders Initiative in the USA and Kenya, where she developed her leadership skills. Her research critically examines Ethiopia's discriminatory legal and institutional frameworks for disabilities in light of international human rights standards.
