Dr. Holly Campeau

Biography

Holly Campeau is an Assistant Professor in Sociology and Legal Studies at the University of Waterloo. Her research interests center on cultural sociology and law, particularly examining the dynamics of policing, police culture, and the interactions between police and citizens. She employs fieldwork and qualitative methods to explore the cultural structures and processes that underlie law and criminal justice. Notably, her doctoral dissertation examines police culture and its implications for accountability and oversight in law enforcement. Campeau is also a Senior Researcher at the Global Justice Lab at the University of Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, focusing on justice reform initiatives. Her current research investigates the dual perspective of police-citizen encounters through interviews with officers and individuals detained, aiming to uncover innovative strategies for improving transparency and legitimacy in policing. She holds research grants to further her studies into community services and police oversight in Canada. Through her publications in renowned journals, Campeau contributes to the understanding of recognition gaps in policing and the cultural dynamics of law enforcement.
