Dr. Hon Lun Wong is an accomplished academic specializing in microbial ecology, particularly in extreme environments. He obtained his PhD from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, focusing on the functional complexity of microbial interactions within enigmatic microbial groups in microbial mats. His principal research has involved performing amplicon sequencing to examine the phylogenetic diversity of bacterial and archaeal communities, coupled with elemental analysis and microelectrode measurements in Shark Bay microbial mats. Dr. Wong has extensive experience in metagenomics, revealing complex partitioned biogeochemical cycles and adaptive responses of microbial communities. He has reconstructed genomes from Asgard archaea, DPANN archaea, and Patescibacteria, contributing significantly to understanding metabolic capacities and interactions in microbial dark matter. Currently, as an EMBO Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Hydrobiology, he investigates phage ecology and virus-host systems in freshwater environments. He is also active in collaborative projects exploring the microbiome of seagrass in Western Australia and has engaged in an extensive sampling campaign across 70 European freshwater lakes as a member of the Pan-European Lake Sampling - Microbial Eco-genomics initiative.
