Biography

Hong Liu is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Department of Physics. He has a long-standing interest in issues related to quantum gravity, the quantum nature of black holes, and the Big Bang singularity, often utilizing the framework of string theory. Over the past decade, his research interests have expanded to include the dynamics of exotic quantum matter, quark-gluon plasma, and strongly correlated electron systems. Liu's current research focuses on the interface of these subjects, enabling the discovery of holographic duality, where quantum matter systems are mathematically equivalent to quantum gravities in higher dimensions. His goal is to develop a multi-pronged approach that integrates insights from string theory and gravity, nuclear physics, and condensed matter physics, in order to tackle complex questions that traditional methods have struggled to address. Liu received his B.S. from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1993 and completed his Ph.D. at Case Western Reserve University in 1997. He has held postdoctoral fellowships at Imperial College and the High Energy Theory Center at Rutgers University before joining the faculty at MIT in 2003.
