Biography

Hong Ma is a Professor of Biology and the Huck Chair at the Eberly College of Science, Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1988 and holds a Bachelor of Arts from Temple University, earned in 1983. Dr. Ma conducted his postdoctoral training at the California Institute of Technology from 1988 to 1990. His research interests center on molecular genetics and evolutionary biology, specifically focusing on plant reproductive development and molecular evolution. He utilizes molecular genetic, cell biological, and genomic bioinformatic approaches to investigate the molecular basis of plant reproductive development. His lab emphasizes studies on genes critical for meiotic homologous recombination and the gene networks that control anther and pollen development in response to environmental changes. Noteworthy discoveries include the role of TOE proteins in flowering regulation in Arabidopsis and essential regulatory functions pertaining to meiotic chromosome dynamics. Dr. Ma has been recognized for his significant contributions to the field, being elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2011 and receiving several prestigious awards throughout his career.
