Hong is passionate about engaging students in learning and currently holds the position of Academic Fellow at the School of Life and Environmental Sciences. She coordinates the Biology Bridging Course and large first year biology units with over 1000 students enrolled. With 10 years of experience in teaching and leading staff in courses covering a broad spectrum of disciplines including molecular and human evolutionary biology, Hong is particularly noted for her enthusiasm for echinoderms. Her work has involved numerous projects that combine developmental biology and physiology to understand the sensitivity of marine organisms, particularly sea stars and sea urchins, in the context of increasing ocean temperatures and acidification. While her research background is rooted in marine climate change biology, she is deeply interested in enhancing student learning. Hong teaches the following units: Life Evolution BIOL 1006/1906, Human Biology BIOL 1008/1908 (coordinator), Life Evolution (SSP) BIOL 1996, Human Biology (SSP) 1998, and the Biology Bridging Course (coordinator) in addition to Ecology and Evolution, Marine Biology.
