Biography

Dr. Hongbo Zeng is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta and holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair. He received his BSc and MSc degrees from Tsinghua University and his PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Zeng’s research interests are primarily in colloid interface science, functional materials, and nanotechnology, focusing on intermolecular surface interactions in soft materials such as polymers, biopolymers, surfactants, emulsions, and hydrogels. His work in complex fluids and petroleum, particularly in oil sands mineral processing and the development of functional materials including self-healing materials, is well recognized in the field. Dr. Zeng has published over 500 peer-reviewed journal articles and has contributed to eleven book chapters. He has received numerous awards for his research, including the Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award, the Martha Cook Piper Research Prize, and the NSERC Steacie Fellowship.
