Biography

Hongshen Ma is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Biomedical Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He obtained his bachelor's degree in Engineering Physics from UBC, a master's degree from the Media Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from MIT. Dr. Ma's research program focuses on developing new technologies for interrogating and manipulating biological systems at the cellular scale, with a particular emphasis on cytometry and cell separation. His work includes developing microfluidic devices to analyze cell deformability and to separate cells based on their deformability. The devices are utilized to analyze the loss of red blood cell deformability, serving as biomarkers in transfusion medicine and for studying falciparum malaria, as well as for separating circulating tumor cells from prostate cancer patients. Moreover, Dr. Ma's research explores the development of machine learning algorithms for image cytometry and technologies for image-based cell separation and single cell sequencing.
