Hongxia Yang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo since 2025. Dr. Yang’s research integrates experimental, numerical, and analytical approaches to advance fundamental understanding of combustion characteristics in reactive flows, industrial explosions, and detonation hazard mitigation. Prior to joining the University of Waterloo, Dr. Yang worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Ottawa where he researched fundamental aspects of hydrogen safety, pressure wave-induced flame deformation, and fluid-structure interactions for flame/detonation arresting. He obtained his PhD degree from Northeastern University in China in 2021, focusing on the dynamics of cellular flame deformation and the subsequent deflagration-to-detonation transition mechanisms during head-on interactions of shocks. His initial PhD studies, from 2013 to 2017, were centered on process safety concerning dust explosions.
