Biography

Hongyi Xiao is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University in 2018 and holds a Bachelor's degree in Thermal Engineering from Tsinghua University, obtained in 2014. His research focuses on granular materials composed of discrete particles and their behavior that mimics solids, liquids, and gases. He aims to uncover the principles of solid-fluid mechanics and statistical physics through a combination of 2D and 3D experiments and discrete particle simulations, with a particular emphasis on machine-learning informed modeling. Currently, he is engaged in understanding the deformation structure-property relationships in granular materials from a design perspective, investigating particle interactions and dynamics at the microscopic scale to discover novel collective behaviors at the material scale. Additionally, he explores how animals and robots interact with granular matter in soft yielding mediums.
