After completing a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics at the University of Queensland, Hongyi Xu pursued a PhD in Materials Engineering, specializing in electron microscopy and semiconductor nano-materials. His PhD studies were sponsored by the Australian Government through the Australian Postgraduate Award program, culminating in a degree awarded in December 2013, where he received the Dean’s Award for academic excellence. Following this, he began a postdoctoral fellowship in Professor Xiaodong Zou’s lab at Stockholm University, notably supported by the Wenner-Gren Foundation. By 2015, he initiated the development of MicroED techniques to study biomolecules. As a principal investigator since 2018, he has applied electron crystallography methods to explore the structures of small molecules and macromolecules, contributing to significant advancements in the field, including a new protein structure determination using MicroED. Currently, he serves as a senior lecturer at the Australian National University and continues to collaborate internationally across more than 25 research groups in various fields, emphasizing the development of modern electron microscopy and electron crystallography methods.
