Biography

Hongying (Hoy) Shen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cellular & Molecular Physiology at Yale School of Medicine. He has been a faculty member since January 2020. His research employs multidisciplinary approaches integrating biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, molecular evolution, and metabolomics to investigate cellular metabolism and its implications for human health and disease. Dr. Shen's work focuses specifically on the deorphanization of hundreds of enzymes and transporters with unknown functions encoded in the human genome, which are crucial for understanding cellular and organismal physiology. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Nanjing University, China, in 2006 and completed his Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University in 2013. His doctoral research involved studying membrane curvature formation and lipid metabolism under Dr. Pietro De Camilli's supervision. Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Shen completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Vamsi Mootha at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he developed integrated metabolomics and CRISPR screening approaches to study mitochondrial metabolism.
