Biography

Dr. Hoon Ryu earned his PhD from Chonbuk National University in South Korea. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship and served as an Instructor in Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in 1999. He joined Boston University’s Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine's Department of Neurology in 2004 as an Assistant Professor and has since progressed to Associate Professor. Dr. Ryu is an investigator at the Boston University Alzheimer’s Disease Center, as well as the VA Boston Healthcare System, and he directs a laboratory focused on Neuronal Gene Regulation and Epigenetics. His research is centered around identifying biomarkers, determining molecular genetic and epigenetic mechanisms, and developing therapeutics using cell culture systems and animal models of neurodegeneration. He has published over 70 original reports. His current studies investigate the mechanisms of ESET gene induction and neuronal heterochromatin condensation in Alzheimer's disease, exploring epigenetic changes that impact synaptic and inflammatory genes involved in the age-dependent development of Alzheimer’s disease.
